Free Taxi, an Ocean City taxicab company, offers just that, a free taxi ride. It is an experiment in customer service that has been unexpectedly successful.
A lot of the public likes the idea. People don’t seem to mind giving big tips if there’s no fare. It’s sort of like karma. you do good and good comes back to you!
As a customer, here’s how it works: you call up the company and one of the five drivers comes to pick you up. The taxi has a meter, and it is turned on, as is the law. But at your destination you are not expected to pay the full fare on the meter, only whatever tip you choose.
The company started in October 2007 with just one taxi, and business has grown so much in a short time that four more Vans have been added totaling 5, and plans to add more as the busy summer approaches. The FREE service area includes Ocean City, West Ocean City and (Fenwick Island De.- if going to or from Maryland - sorry no De. to De. service at this time)

It can, and it is.
The company has all the proper licenses and all the vehicles have been inspected by the police department and a MD inspection station like every other taxi in town.
By law, every taxi must have a meter set by the police department, and it must be running during every ride. Drivers cannot charge a penny more than what the meter says, but they are free to charge less if they want.

The drivers pay for their own gas and pay rent for using the Taxi, something their tips are intended to cover. It’s not a lucrative business, but it is popular, and making money is not the top priority.

After a night out at the local watering hole, people often find they did not leave enough cash in their wallets to pay for a cab ride home. With Free Taxi’s no-charge service, there is no more excuse for anyone to drive drunk.

My name is Norman Mullinix.
My mother died from her injuries caused by a drunk driver, I was with her as her
passenger when the drunk driver hit a street light and knocked it across the
road in front of us. At the same time an 18 wheeler was comming in the opposite
direction this was on a 2 lane road all she could do was hit the pole.
After a few weeks she became sick she said she had the flu, as I know now it was
her internal injuries.
She passed away after 3 months and 3 surgeries.
